The Friends of the Global Fund, Japan, congratulates Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on his election as the new World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General.
Dr. Tedros has long been a champion of the fight against HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, having served as chair of the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria from 2009 to 2011. As Minister of Health in Ethiopia from 2005 to 2012, he is credited with building a robust primary health care system by leveraging support from the Global Fund and PEPFAR. More than 38,000 community health workers have been trained, partly through the support from the Global Fund, to provide healthcare services, including those in the area of infectious diseases, at the community level.
JCIE and FGFJ have welcomed Dr. Tedros to Japan multiple times, most recently when he addressed the Global Health and Human Security Program Executive Committee and shared his vision for WHO reform.
