FGFJ was pleased to learn of the Global Fund’s appointment of Shunsuke Mabuchi, a senior global health leader with extensive experience in health system strengthening and pandemic preparedness and response, to serve as the new head of resilient and sustainable systems for health from March 2022.
Since September 2018, Mr. Mabuchi has worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as deputy director for strategy, planning & management, integrated delivery, and then as senior advisor for health funds and partnerships. Between October 2020 and April 2021, Mr. Mabuchi also served as a secretariat member of the WHO-commissioned Independent Panel on Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPPR).
Prior to his role at the Gates Foundation, he was a team leader at the World Bank for health systems improvement in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, Tanzania, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Somalia. He also led the emergency response task team for the 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, where he was instrumental in bringing the epidemic under control and building resilient health systems post-outbreak.
Mr. Mabuchi began his career at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) before working in the McKinsey & Company’s Japan and South Africa offices. He has received a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a Master’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University as well as a PhD in Public Health during his term at the World Bank.
