FGFJ Convenes Joint Diet Task Force & Advisory Board Meeting

FGFJ jointly convened the 40th meeting of the Diet Task Force and the 32nd meeting of the Advisory Board to review the 8th Replenishment of the Global Fund. The meeting explored the potential for additional commitments from Japan toward Grant Cycle 8 through new financial resources and mechanisms.

The pledge announced by the Government of Japan to the Global Fund on November 25, 2025, was a maximum of ¥81 billion, which equates to US$510 million, or roughly half of its previous pledge. While this reduction stems in part from fiscal constraints and the depreciation of the yen, concerns have been raised both domestically and internationally regarding the depth of this cut relative to other major donors.

The meeting began with the officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare explaining the context and background of the reduced pledge. That was followed by Diet members and experts voicing their serious concerns. Advisory Board members from CSOs, private companies, and academia made statements focusing on the impact of the reduced contribution on the international community and the potential negative impact on Japanese companies and Japanese NGOs; Japan’s role and challenges in the global health sector; and the future direction of ODA.

The participants engaged in a constructive and substantive discussion, focusing in particular on how Japan can maintain its commitment and presence in the global health arena in light of the reduced financial contribution.

The FGFJ Diet Task Force is a multi-party initiative that brings together Diet members to examine ways to broaden Japan’s international role in combating the global threats of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other communicable diseases. The task force convenes several times a year with experts and leaders from around the world. For more information, visit the FGFJ Diet Task Force page.
