On May 23, 2008, Prime Minister Fukuda announced Japan’s new financial commitment of US$560 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund). This new commitment will bring Japan’s total contribution to US$1.4 billion since the Global Fund was established in 2002. The prime minister’s announcement was made at a symposium co-sponsored by the Global Fund; the Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ); and Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on “From Okinawa to Toyako: Dealing with Communicable Diseases as Global Human Security Threats.” In his remarks to the symposium, Global Fund Executive Director Michel Kazatchkine exclaimed, “I extend my sincere thanks to you, prime minister, and to the government and people of Japan, for your generous and steadfast support of the Global Fund. Thank you for your trust and confidence in the Global Fund. Japan is truly helping to fight disease and save lives in every corner of the world.”
