On March 18, 2010, Takeda Pharmaceutical and the Global Fund announced an exciting new partnership in which Takeda will contribute JPY1 billion (approximately US$10 million) over ten years for the Global Fund’s programs. Takeda is one of the first Japanese companies to make such a major financial contribution to addressing an important global challenge.
Tadashi Yamamoto, president of JCIE and director of the FGFJ, which helped facilitate the partnership, commented on the commitment: “Takeda’s contribution is truly groundbreaking. It is one of the first times that a Japanese company is taking such a leading role in the global fight against these three diseases. It provides an exemplary model of how diverse sectors of society in Japan can actively contribute more to global challenges such as deadly communicable diseases.”
Since the Global Fund’s inception in 2001, the private sector—including businesses, business associations, and individuals—has contributed to the work of the Global Fund in a variety of ways, ranging from engaging in the governance of the Global Fund to making cash and non-cash contributions to collaborating with in-country partners and recipients. To date, private sector and nongovernmental donors have contributed more than US$850 million to the Global Fund.
