Nearly 20 years ago, the idea to create a global fund to fight infectious diseases was proposed at the G8 Summit in Okinawa. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was launched in 2002, and two years later—15 years ago—the Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ) was created to help support Japan’s engagement in the fight against the three deadly diseases. At the time the Global Fund was established, nearly 6 million people were dying each year from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Since 2000, though, TB-related deaths in countries supported by the Global Fund partnership have fallen 21 percent, deaths from AIDS have declined 40 percent, and malaria-related deaths have dropped by 60 percent. Through the Global Fund partnership, more than 27 million lives have been saved.
This event convenes leading policymakers and experts—including Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands—along with those on the frontlines of the battle with the three deadly diseases, to reflect on the impact that the Global Fund has had, what is unique about its approach, and what now needs to be done to take the next steps to combat these killer diseases. It will also look at how the Global Fund can be used most effectively to help achieve Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since Japan helped give birth to the Global Fund and has been one of its greatest proponents, allocating over US$3 billion to date to support its work, the meeting will also focus on Japan’s special role in keeping the world moving forward in the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria and in the promotion of resilient and sustainable systems for health.
