President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will host the 6th Global Fund Replenishment Conference in 2019. President Macron has placed priority on global health in his country’s policy on development, and the decision to host this meeting highlights his commitment to the fight against the three major infectious diseases.
France was one of the founding member countries of the Global Fund and is the second-largest donor, having committed more than €4.2 billion to the Global Fund. It has also played a pioneering role in scientific research and development initiatives that are indispensable to the fight against the three diseases, and promoting gender equality and human rights.
In the announcement, the president called infectious diseases a major challenge in global health, with dramatic human and economic consequences, especially in low income countries, and he called for international cooperation and mobilization at the highest levels.

About the replenishment meetings: Once every three years, the Global Fund calculates the amount of money necessary to fund measures against infectious diseases and calls on the international community to raise the money. This process is called “replenishment” and consists of “fundraising meetings” where each country pledges funding and two “fundraising preparation meetings” that take place several months to a year ahead of time. The Sixth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund is expected to raise funds for the period from 2020 through 2022. It is the first time that France will host a Global Fund replenishment conference.
