FGFJ Issue Brief | “The Lusaka Agenda and the Challenges of Global Aid Coordination”

Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ) is pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of the FGFJ Issue Brief series: “The Lusaka Agenda and the Challenges of Global Aid Coordination”

The first issue features commentary by Dr. Ryuichi Komatsu, Visiting Professor at Nagasaki University, on the latest developments in aid effectiveness surrounding Global Health Initiatives (GHIs), such as the Global Fund, Gavi, GFF, Unitaid, CEPI, and FIND.

Dr. Komatsu worked at the Global Fund from 2005 to 2023, where he held senior leadership positions. After departing from the Global Fund, he became involved in the Future of GHIs (FGHI) process, which produced the Lusaka Agenda. He was among some experts who participated in the two task teams of the FGHI process.

This issue brief looks at how GHIs are expected to transform in the coming years to make a greater contribution to universal health coverage and primary health care in the future. It summarizes the background to the development of the Lusaka Agenda, its significance, and expectations for change. With insight into the trends in assistance in global health, it highlights three areas in which Japan may be strategically involved and play leading roles: thought leadership at the global level; engagement as a bilateral donor in pathfinder countries; and research and development in health innovation.

*This Issue Brief is only available in Japanese.
