Peter Sands discusses the importance of supporting LMICs in response to the COVID variants.

In conjunction with the launch of the Global Fund’s new Results Report, which showcases the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands was featured in an interview by one of the top national newspapers in Japan, the Asahi Shimbun GLOBE (print) and GLOBE+ (online).

Peter Sands interview Asahi GLOBE+

In the article, Mr. Sands highlights the following points:

  • In order to prevent infections until the vaccines made available worldwide, it is necessary to accelerate diagnostics/testing, PPE, and oxygen.
  • The impact of COVID-19 is not limited to the deaths from COVID-19, but also include the “knock-on impacts”, the incremental deaths from other diseases. We should learn from what the last pandemic, AIDS Pandemic taught us, which the poorest countries waited for more than 7 years for the treatment to became accessible.
  • Tackling inequality will help us stop the spread of the virus and make the world a safer place for everyone, so hopefully the G20 leaders will commit to doing better when they meet in October.
