The Japan Center for International Exchange/Friends of the Global Fund, Japan—in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre—is pleased to bring the famed Isango Ensemble’s La Bohème/Abanxaxhi to Japan for its Asian premiere.

The Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) and its Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ) initiative, organized a series of events during the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V).

JCIE and the FGFJ joined forces with the Global Fund, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, and UNAIDS to organize a high-level panel on recent progress that has been made in the fight against communicable diseases.

JCIE and FGFJ teamed up with the Health and Global Policy Institute to organize a symposium on corporate engagement in global health.
The FGFJ organized a Diet Task Force Roundtable featuring Senegalese Minister of Health Awa Marie Coll-Seck, former UNAIDS Executive Director and Hideo Noguchi Africa Prize Laureate Peter Piot, and Global Fund Executive Director Mark Dybul.

The FGFJ congratulates long-time friend Peter Piot on winning the second Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in the medical research category for his work with diseases endemic to much of the African continent, including HIV, Ebola, chlamydia, tuberculosis, and gonorrhea.

Recently appointed Global Fund Executive Director Mark Dybul made his first visit to Japan to meet local partners and encourage them to maintain Japan’s commitment to the fight against communicable diseases.

Global Fund Executive Director Mark Dybul announced the appointment of a Japanese expert on health and development policy, Osamu Kunii, as the new director of the fund’s Strategy, Investment and Impact Division.

To celebrate World AIDS Day, which takes place every year on December 1, the FGFJ co-organized a seminar on the global fight against AIDS in collaboration with the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO). The main feature of the seminar was former head of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Peter Piot.
